Are you getting anywhere? Can I read something?

“Writing seems super to me, but where do I find the time? The inspiration? I have dozens of ideas, my head full of everything I’ve experienced at the office. Not to mention the winged words of my mother-in-law. But I can’t get a single sentence on paper. Let me face reality: this will lead to nothing. Never!”

Let me tell you some little-known facts about writing books. If you can read this little article, then you’ve also learned to write, and we all have imagination. A pinch of courage with a few spoons of free time is all you need.

 How did you ever start?

Out of sheer frustration. I can do better, I thought when I had thrown yet another sleep-inducing study book into the corner. The text flowed from my fingers, but I mainly saw it as a way to write away my annoyances. I had a new hobby. Nowadays I write on two tracks. Short autobiographical stories and fiction. For myself and without time pressure. I don't have to make a living from it and that gives me all the freedom.

What are your writing habits?

They have changed over the years. I used to write for an hour in the evening, often at the office when the traffic jams had not yet cleared up. Highly recommended! An hour of writing instead of zapping or browsing.

I am now retired and can afford more. I am now an afternoon person when it comes to writing. Three times a week an afternoon in my own office, with Spotify or the silence.

Any more tips for beginning writers?

Of course!

Be prepared for the inevitable questions: Are you getting anywhere? Can I read something? I always have a few mini-projects to satisfy the curious and to justify my "writing time" (He is really writing, isn't he?). I spend most of my time on my "real" projects, which no one will see for the time being. Preferably work on your own computer or create a visible folder with projects that can withstand the peeking of the curious. Create a secure folder with your “real” projects.

And my most important tips: claim your time and be brave.

Good luck!
